Golden Open Space, less than one hour east of Albuquerque

Golden Open Space is near Madrid, New Mexico, in the foothills of the eastern side of the Sandia Mountains. It has good hiking trails and pretty views.

On the loop hike

The main hike is about a three-mile loop. Another hike leaves the loop and goes down into a canyon and up to an adjacent peak and back, adding several more miles of hiking.

View from the loop hike, not far from the parking lot.
View from inside a cave. There is one small diversion on the loop hike that goes up to a pinnacle. Once there, you will find some cairns that signal the way to the cave which is out-of-view and under the pinnacle. It is a short but steep climb down to the small cave.
