Valles Caldera National Preserve, two hours northwest of Albuquerque

The Valles Caldera National Preserve is located in the Jemez Mountains south of Los Alamos on Highway 4. It is an enormous crater from an ancient volcano. It has a rich history including:

  • Jemez Pueblo ancient sacred sites
  • privately owned ranching and logging operations
  • old Western movie sets
  • geothermal energy research
  • wildlife research

It is now run by the National Park Service and is a wonderful place to photograph. It is easier to visit when there is not heavy snow.
